Saying Yes

Why is it so very easy to say no when our child asks to do something? I've come across a lot of reading recently on the importance of saying yes, thankfully so for my curious and energetic boy. Too often we say no simply because something is so mildly inconvenient or because we don't feel like doing something. But since when is parenting all about us?

The more I think about and read about the importance of saying yes, the more I am certain doing so will benefit both my boy and his parents. So tonight, when AJ asked to go outside when it was raining pretty heavily, I had to take a step back and rethink my gut reaction. My first response was, "No, honey, it's raining out there." Then the internal dialogue started: Really? It's not cold out. It's water. Why can't he go out? Because I don't feel like cleaning him off afterward? He's taking a bath tonight anyway! So my "no" quickly became a "I'll be right back, AJ, let me go get your swimsuit!" The two minutes it took to grab his suit from upstairs, unsnap his diaper, dress him, and take off his socks were more than worth the exploration and smiles outside. Next time, I hope my first reaction will be to say, "Yes, AJ, absolutely!"

Showing me the rain pouring off of the patio roof:

Wet little footprints make me smile:

Sometimes I really wish I could know what he's thinking... What a face!

Dirt: Life's better with a lot of it, isn't it?

And that's what it's all about:

Here's an inspiring post I read a few weeks ago about saying yes. It's not too long, and it's absolutely worth a few minutes of your time, I promise.

Time for bed now. After rereading that link, I'm already looking forward to saying yes again tomorrow!

EIGHTEEN MONTHS OLD!

So now that the seventeen month post is up, here is the eighteen month update. Our boy is getting too big, too fast. It seems like every day he is more little boy and less baby. Where has the time gone? Here's what he's up to now:

- Talking much more, saying "go, dog, go;" "stop;" "bye-bye;" and "cheese." He also knows what a cow, sheep, and dog say, and he "says" bird, truck, and bike (which can mean motorcycle, bicycle, or moped), though those words are really only distinguishable to James and me.

- He knows when a picture is upside down instead of right side up. Boy was I surprised when I realized that he knew this! They learn so quickly, these little people.

- He tells us as soon as he's gone to the bathroom, nearly without fail. We've purchased a little potty that we keep in our downstairs bathroom for him to use (he seems very nervous on the big toilet). We're not "training" him; instead, we're just following his cues and letting him use the potty as he seems interested.

- He can climb onto the desk chair, and therefore onto the desk now. Definitely not ideal, but we're not going to relocate the chair, so he just requires even closer supervision when he's in the living room.

- We night-weaned a couple of weeks ago, so he's no longer nursing from about 7pm until 4am. It was a pretty easy process and only took him a couple of nights to be completely content with a sip of water instead. I think that explaining to him - and reminding him often - that once he goes to sleep, there won't be any more milk until the morning really helped. Now he says "ni-night" to the milk after he says goodnight to us; so sweet! He still asks at night (more out of habit, I think) and night-weaning hasn't seemed to improve our night waking situation at all. But, that'll improve in due time.

- He "gets" bugs (imaginary ones) all the time now. It's hilarious, except when he licks his hand afterward, which has become his new thing. Yuck. (Of course, he thinks he's hilarious when he does it.) But the "bug getting" cracks us up, because he'll do it in such a spontaneous, unprovoked manner. We'll have to try to videotape it soon...

- He understands so much of what we're saying, it's crazy. We're starting to be even more careful about what we say and do in front of - and within earshot of - our little sponge. He's already becoming quite a good listener for a one-and-a-half-year-old, which is pretty impressive to us.

- He's teething like there's no tomorrow. Oh my goodness. He can't seem to stop himself from biting everything, and it's driving me a bit crazy. Come on, teeth! Let's get a move on already!

His eighteen month well-visit isn't until the 31st, so we'll find out how big he's gotten then. I think there's been a pretty significant change since last time; his appetite has increased dramatically, and he's reaching further onto the countertops and table all the time. We'll see! (But I do hope he slows down soon! Let's not rush into this big boy-ness, okay, AJ?)

We took some pictures while we enjoyed a picnic lunch (a new weekend tradition we've started and are loving) at Neal Blaisdell Park, which isn't too far from where we live. Here are some of the better shots:

This is how he walks around all the time now, with his hands folded behind his back:

My little chip thief; he's quick! Good thing Daddy's quicker!

 "Bird!"

Such a lovely little eater... Look at those cheeks!

Running around the backyard at home:

 "Here, Mama. A rock!"

 Yep, that's sand. Delicious!

I can't believe it's been a whole year-and-a-half that we've had this sweet boy in our lives. Boy, are we blessed! Happy 18 months, sweet boy! We love you!

The Boy: Seventeen Months Old

Eighteen months and one week is an optimal time to publish AJ's seventeen month post, right? No? Well, here it is anyway after just over a month of procrastination. (Still hoping I'll grow out of that someday...)

Here's what the boy was up to as of a month ago:

- No longer uses a pacifier! A month or so ago (now two months), he'd started throwing his pacifier across the room after thirty seconds of sucking on it and wouldn't take it again. So, we started not offering it to him at all, and he hasn't asked for it since!

- LOVES to read. This boy could (and does!) read the same book ten times in a row. (I know P.D. Eastman's Go, Dog. Go! by heart now.) I'd say that hands down, reading is his favorite thing to do. No complaints here!

- His love of reading is followed closely by his love of being outside. It was the cutest thing to see him call me into the dining room, point like crazy to his hat, and realize that he wanted me to give him his hat so that he could go play in the backyard. We let him back there by himself now (it's fenced) and watch him from the living room; we like that it gives him a little more space to play how he'd like and to use his imagination.

Our boy did a whole lot of growing and changing over that month. (I wish I had documented a bit more of it before my memory started to fail me. Darn mommy brain!) Fortunately we were able to get some last minute pictures done on the 10th of September. AJ's not too camera-cooperative anymore, but here are the best of what we managed to capture:

These first several shots were taken on Ford Island, where we stayed when we first arrived on Oahu.

"Look, Mama, a stick!" Way better than a silly camera, right?

As is playing in the dirt:

The cheese face:

This is the face we get when we say, "Say cheese, AJ!"

Then we went over to the Fire Department across the street from our housing community. They had done a really awesome job at honoring those who were lost on September 11th:

Notice all the real smiles are happening when he's running? That's because we had to chase him around to get a grin out of him. That's quite a lot of work for a few pictures! Oh well... That grin is definitely worth it!

Happy (belated) 17 months, Andrew James!
